Exnora - Solid Waste Management Project
On Saturday June 27th, 2009 an Environment Day function was held at the Sri Narayani Peedam. During the function a Solid Waste Management Project was inagurated. A program like this started in the year 2000 on a very small scale with only 5 members of staff and has now grown to comfortably employ over 200 people.
Excess waste and pollution are among the many factors threatening our environment. It should be given a high priority and should be taken care of in the conservation of our environment and the planet as a whole. With this in mind Sri Sakthi Amma embarked on an illustrious program called “Sri Sakthi Amma Exnora Zero Waste Management” which transforms Waste into Manure and other usable products.
The Sri Narayani Peedam and Sripuram have collaborated with the Exnora International Organization for the conservation of the environment. On an average 2 tons of garbage is collected everyday from the surrounding areas of Thirumalaikodi. The garbage is then sorted into recyclable and non-recyclable waste.
During the treatment process natural manure is created and used at the Sakthi Amma Greenery Afforestation Revolution (SAGAR) and the Sakthi Amma Afforestation Program (SAAP). Cleaning powders are made from the fruit peelings. Cow dung collected from the Ghosala is mixed with waste from food stuff, vegetables and fruits and is processed to make gas. This gas is used at the Kamala Nivas, Hospital and community kitchens to prepare food.
The employees of this program receive a good salary, uniforms, safety equipment, free meals, free medical treatment and medical insurance. Officials from Exnora International Organization did an inspection of the facilities and were very impressed with its operations.
