Pot Pongal Celebrations

Pot Pongal Celebrations

On August 3rd, 2007, the month of Adi, the Pot Pongal celebrations took place at the Sri Narayani Peedam to give thanks for the abundance of blessing from Goddess Narayani and to pray for the well being of everyone.

The function started with a procession of about 300 women led by Mrs. Jothi Ammal, the mother of Sri Narayani Amma. The procession went around the village and ended at the road outside of the Peedam.

After procession the women lined up along the road ready to put their pots on the fire. Each of them cooked a pot of Pongal rice some of which was offered first to Sri Narayani.

Pongal is a popular South Indian rice dish of which there are two varieties, sakarai pongal (sweet pongal) and kara pongal (spicy pongal).
